The Versatile Moda Jelly Roll
The "Spell it with Fabric" blog tour going on right now got me thinking about all of the wonderful things you can do with a jelly roll...
"Hopscotch" Jelly Roll Pattern by Thimbleblossoms (Simply Color fabric by V & Co)
But those incredible "Spell it with Moda" letters can all be made with jelly roll or 2 1/2" strips!
And there are also a lot of other fun uses for your Moda Jelly Rolls or bits and pieces left over from your favorite Jelly Roll quilts.
Here are 10 ideas for Jelly Roll strips and scraps:
- Make strip sets for 9-patch blocks
- Make strip sets for 4-patch blocks
- Cut strips 4 1/2" long. Use with 2 1/2" squares (Moda Candy squares work great) to create scrappy Flying Geese blocks.
- Sew strips together for a scrappy back.
- Make "framed" 9-patch blocks (1 Jelly Roll strip is enough to frame a 6" finished 9-patch.
- Make a "coins" quilt using left over Jelly Roll pieces.
- Make Log Cabin blocks.
- Make piano key borders for a scrappy quilt.
- Make kitchen accessories: pot holders, place mats, mug rugs, or coasters.
- Make scrappy binding by cutting Jelly Roll strips into fourths and then sewing together as many pieces as needed for the length desired.

They are just great strips of fabric to cut into different sizes for your quilt. You get the variety of all the colors. I love jelly rolls.

I haven' had that many jelly rolls, but I bought a wonderful book that puts them to great use and have a few earmarked for the next jelly roll
ReplyDeletei've been using 3 jelly rolls of "road 15" and sewing them into strip sets of 5. Then I cut four squares from each set-layer 2 squares on top of one another (rotating the top one so the strips run the opposite way the others are) and sew around the outside of the square. Then cut across diagonally twice and you have four fun blocks. makes really fun blocks. check it out at instagram "nancysewsstuff"

ReplyDeleteNine patch blocks are easy to do with jelly rolls and they are fabulous for doing a scrappy binding when you have odd ones left over!

ReplyDeleteI just love putting them in quilts, trying to make them not all look like strips: for example, squares, flying geese, rectangles cut on the diagonal, etc.

ReplyDeleteI love so many things about jelly rolls! In a pinch, you can make one of those jelly roll quilts (I don't know who started it!) by sewing the strips end to end until you have this enormous strip and then bringing it up and dewing it to itself. That is truly a terrible description, but those who have made one will know what I'm talking about. I have to restrain myself from using all my jelly rolls like that!!

ReplyDeleteAlways looking for patterns to use jelly rolls. I look in the local patchwork shops and even the library. I enjoyed making `Pinwheel Pirouette` 2007 with Moda to go Madeira- Blackbird Designs. Love the little tin case it came in.
