Deciding...

With the new year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start organizing, planning and deciding on your quilting projects for 2013!

I really like to take some time to think about my quilting goals and ideas. It seems there are always more projects on the "I Want to Make This Someday" list than I might ever be able to complete in a few lifetimes; however, taking stock on a regular basis really helps to keep the most importatnt projects at the top of the list!

Here are a few ideas:
  • First, sort through your "works-in-progress." There might be one, two, or a few that might not take too much to get them finished. Finishing up a couple works in progress always seems to help me get organized. I like to also make a list of these projects so I can refer to it throughout the year.
  • Next, think about those projects you've been wanting to make. I like to look through patterns and fabric and look over on-line bookmarked sites while making my list.
  • I actually have two "want to make" lists: the first one has quick and easy projects on it, and the second one has projects that will take a bit more time.
Last year my number one goal was to finish my Fig Tree Farmer's Wife quilt. If I hadn't decided that this was a finish I wanted at the very beginning of the year I don't think I would have finished all 111 blocks and set them together.

  • Along with lists of specific projects, try making a list of new techniques or skills you want to work on during the new year. In years past different things like applique' or foundation paper piecing, or English paper piecing have been on my list. This year I'm going to try and quilt more of my own projects, and I really want to sew some projects with laminate fabrics.

  • Sometimes I have favorite groups of fabric I'm just not sure what to do with. With these, I like to gather them together and leave them somewhere I can see them every day. Having a coordinated stack in a visible spot in my sewing room seems to help me figure out when the "perfect project" for that group comes along.

  • Don't make too many goals or have unrealistic expectations. I've been thinking about starting a really big project and plan on having a two-year timetable for it.
  • Another reason to not have too many projects on the list is to leave yourself time for new ideas that may come along...the little Vintage Modern tumbler mat below was one of those projects for me...I just put everything aside one afternoon and made something fun!

What ever your quilting goals might be for the new year, taking a little time to think them out can have big rewards...who knows...you might just be able to figure out what to make with that favorite pre-cut you've been saving!  Happy deciding for the new year!

  1. Some good ideas! I was very unproductive this year, so I'm hoping to make more than two quilts in 2013'

  5. Some very good ideas here Sherri, thank you. I have been putting off tackling a huge project because I know it will overtake everything but to plan it for 2 yrs..well duh me, why didn't I think of that? And a list of quick to make is also great idea! Those projects are often left to last minute now. Happy New Year, I have to get planning!

  7. Happy Holidays, Sherri. I knew this was your post once I saw the Farmer's Wife quilt top; it's gorgeous, by the way! Thanks for the great quilting tips. I hope I can be half as productive as you in the New Year!

  8. Thank you for the great advice. I seem to have more time to buy the wonderful fabric than make something, and get overwhelmed trying to decide what to do. I am making a real effort this next year to do some projects, and of course still buy fabric.

  11. I really have been thinking about the "2013 sewing/quiltng" goals. I like to plan by writing different things down and then prioritizing visually.

I like "small" things sometimes and I like "bigger" things sometimes so I am working on a couple lists.

I also put on my list, what fabrics I think I might like to use, especially from my stash. I don't have very many BIG backing pieces so I know I'll have to purchase those in 2013.

My biggest goal this year? Not to buy any new clothes. But, needless to say, that doesn't mean I won't be going to our local thrift shop....LOL

    Happy goal making!

  13. I have the ideas in my head but was waiting till all the holiday is past before I make goals. My goal from last year...a quilt for every season/holiday...but figured..I dont' need a quilt in the summer months when it is over 100*! So might not continue with that one!
I think it is refreshingly funny how most use bookshelves and you see the lines and lines of books, quilters use bookshelves an you see lines and lines of gorgous color and patterns!

  14. Thank you for your idea. I need to write down the things I want to accomplish next year. That way I can cross them off after they are done, which will make me feel good.

  15. I definitely need to regroup with my projects and put them all into perspective. I think some of those fun and quick ones are important because you get a nice quick sense of accomplishment.

  16. I too, must develop a plan to get things moving. 2012 was not very productive sewing-wise for me. I like the nudge you've given me!

  17. i so cannot look through any more books - way too many quilts I want to make already LOL.
This year I joined a WIP blog group with the idea of finishing a quilt a month and that was a good way of being kept accountable (even if I didn't have a finish every month!)

  18. I said I wasn't going into the New Year with any UFO's but 2 weeks of the flu changed all that I don't think I can finish 2 quilts in one day lol!

  19. I just got the book The Farmer's Wife and for me it's a bit more challenging than I thought. How did you go about picking fabrics for it? Just as a scrap quilt or is there a method to the madness ? love your work!!
