Quilt Market Spring 2012 sneak peek 2

Day 1 of Market is over and I cannot begin to describe the energy, excitement and enthusiasm on the show floor. Don't get me wrong, this is not like strolling along Michigan Avenue's over the top window displays, but pretty close. Market is long hours and miles of walking on lightly carpeted concrete floors. One saying that is true for market is "fashion stops at the knee."
This is so true because it is all about the comfortable shoes.
Yesterday I showed you some of the new collections and I thought I would go ahead
and wet your appetite for a few more  fabrics that
will be headed to your favorite store this fall.
The first three groups shown are designers that have just debuted their first line with moda. How exciting for them to see all their months of work come to fruition.

More feast for your eyes with the following collections.

Now would be a good time to clean your sewing machine, change your needles and get it all oiled up for fall and holiday sewing.
Make your shopping list!!

Meet the New Designers

Pat Sloan has been creating since she was a child. From the first shoebox dioramas to sketches for a fabric line, there has always been creative energy flowing. When she tried her hand at quilting in 1989, she never looked back. During a career in computers as a software developer and project manager she started her design business in the evenings and weekends. Then in 2000 she and her husband decided to take the leap and open their family business full time. You'll find Gregg managing all the all the behind the scenes activities.
Pat's quilts have been published in all the national magazine since 1998. She now has over 25 published books with Leisure arts, many patterns, and she hosts American Patchwork & Quilting radio show which is heard around the globe on the internet.. and they are recorded for you to listen to at any time!
Coming from a technology background, Pat has been on a computer since she was 16 years old and the machine took up the entire back of her math class.  A self proclaimed 'Geek' she loves the internet and you will find her at all the best places. She has built blogs, quilting yahoo groups, forums, facebook communities, and even the group “Quilters in Second Life” for quilting enthusiasts using the popular virtual world, Second Life.
Look for Pat in your area, she and Gregg travel all over the world to visit quilters and play with fabric!  Pat’s overall passion has always been to help others harness their creative energy.

Pat will be working with Bigfork Bay Cotton Co. on a block of the month, Red Apple Lane.

We fell in love with Brigitte's clean simple lines at market when her booth was right next to ours.
A former interior designer and student of textile design, Brigitte Heitland has been sewing since she was a young girl. Coming from making her own clothes, German Brigitte learned only a few years ago about quilting, but was at once hooked on. She brings her modern and sophisticated style in her quilts characterized by shrewd simplicity, harmonious color and class workmanship. Brigitte launched her brand ZEN CHIC in 2010 and designs not only quilt patterns but also her own fabric lines. Besides she is an experienced longarm quilter and since modern quilting is so dear to her heart she teaches different classes about contemporary quilting techniques and good use of color. Brigitte is mother of three children and lives with her family in Germany. To learn more about her style you’re invited to visit her website http://www.brigitteheitland.de/

Be sure and stop by Moda's booth at Quilt Market to meet these 3 talented ladies. as well as see everything else new and exciting. If you are not  coming to market, stop back by the Cutting Table blog for a full after market interview from the new designers and pictures of their fabrics and projects.

Vanessa Christenson: Simply Color

While sewers of a certain generation often learned to sew by hand, lots of younger stitchers started by cranking up a sewing machine. But not Vanessa Christenson. When she was in middle school she asked a friend of her mom’s to teach her to quilt and because she didn’t have a machine, hand sewing was the method she learned. She created a few blocks, but then high school and college intervened. “I was dating and involved in activities and having so much fun that sewing didn’t come into my mind again for years,” she says.

When it finally reappeared, Vanessa was married, 25 years old, and pregnant with her second son. “I wanted some cool pillows for my home,” says Vanessa, for whom interior design is a lifelong passion; even when she was just four and five years old, she loved moving things around her bedroom.

A friend taught Vanessa the basics—how to turn on and thread a machine—and Vanessa hasn’t looked back since. Today, sewing is a defining characteristic of her life. She’s written a sewing book, Make It Sew Modern; creates patterns for quilts, bags, pillows, and more; and has designed her first line of fabric, Simply Color, for Moda.

Though thoroughly modern, Simply Color was inspired by the past. Vanessa’s an avid thrifter and loves fabrics from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. “I’ve always been drawn to flowers and ‘spriggy’ things,” she says. One of Simply Color's leaf motifs pays homage to a vintage sheet she found at Goodwill and used to make herself a skirt and a quilt for her daughter.

Simply Color is also inspired by Vanessa’s past. Though she now lives in the Midwest and spent some years in Utah, Vanessa’s roots are in California and she says the blues and greens of the ocean are a constant in her life. She’s excited by the way hues like eggplant and tangerine work so well with her lifelong favorites.

She’s also super-excited about Simply Color’s ombre fabrics. She’d previously played with Bella solids in color values from dark to light to get a similar effect, but being able to get that range of tones from a single piece of fabric is a revelation. “Pleating an ombre fabric is amazing,” says Vanessa, who loves to add texture through her stitching. She’s doing just that for framed wall hangings she’s making for the walls of her four children’s rooms. “Fabric isn’t just in a blanket on your bed or a skirt around your waist,” she says. “It can be so much more!”
