Write This Way

Welcome Cosmo Cricket to the talented design team at Moda Fabrics.
Write This Way: Circa 1934 by Cosmo Cricket

 Julie Comsotck of Cosmo Cricket

A love of letters was the starting point for Circa 1934, the line of fabric for Moda designed by Eric and Julie Comstock, the husband-and-wife team who go by the name Cosmo Cricket.

Eric developed an enduring affinity for typography when he worked as a typesetter in an old print shop during his college years. Circa 1934 started with typewriter key cap imagery, as well as numbers in a lively, high-contrast typeface so popular during the 1930s. It grew to include design elements like ceiling tiles and moldings found in the building that housed the old type blocks. “Our designs often work this way,” says Julie. “It’s a very organic process.” The result is a line of fabric with elements bold and graphic, as well as sweetly detailed.

Sharing ideas comes easily for Eric and Julie, who work at back-to-back desks in their home studio. They have distinct personal styles—Eric favors a clean, modern look while Julie’s most at home with a vintage, cottage-y vibe. By melding those two perspectives, Cosmo Cricket’s created a distinctive look that can be found on posters, gift wrap, online photo books, and more.

Circa 1934 is their first line of fabric for Moda, and Julie is especially thrilled. “Whenever we design something, I always tell Eric I’d love to see it in fabric,” she says. For years Julie sewed curtains and pillows for their home and she also enjoyed designing and sewing clothing for their four children, as well as some of her own. Work has kept her from the sewing machine lately, but seeing precuts of Circa 1934 is inspiring a return to stitching.

Project shown will be in a future Quilts N More issue.

They also remind her of why Cosmo Cricket’s partnership with Moda is so rewarding. “Moda shows real finesse with every product they put out,” says Julie. “Everything they do, right down to the packaging of charm packs and jelly rolls with those wonderful little tags and ribbons, makes us feel that Moda values our work.”

Enjoy the pleasures of the English countryside with Northcote Range

Welcome Cabbages and Roses to the design team at Moda Fabrics.

Enjoy the pleasures of the English countryside with Northcote Range by Cabbages and Roses.

English country living is the inspiration for Moda’s newest line of fabric, Northcote Range. Designed by Britain’s Christina Strutt, the fabrics would look right at home fluttering in the windows of in a cozy cottage or draped across the trestle table in a farm house kitchen. You can almost hear the teapot whistling, while the sheep bleat in a nearby meadow.

Christina started her fashion and home décor company, Cabbages & Roses, ten years ago. Northcote Range, with its soft colors, gentle stripes, and white-washed, full-blown flowers, fits right into with the company’s “refined rustic” aesthetic and is perfect for clothing, interiors, and quilts.

“The designs are inspired by traditional, flowery prints, which are always a favorite, as well as the tiny, ditzy prints which work so well for patches,” Christina says.

In the 1970s, Christina rose through the ranks from secretary to assistant editor for Vogue Living, and left in 1980 to marry and raise a family. She continued freelance styling and interior decorating from her country home, opening Cabbages & Roses in 2000, first as a mail order business, then adding brick-and-mortar shops in London and now Japan. She’s written five books, including the 2010 Cabbages and Roses: At Home With Country.

Designing fabric is one of Christina’s favorite tasks, and she enjoys imagining the pleasures it brings sewers. “The fact is that in its own way, fabric can totally change life, your outlook on life, and the way one lives,” she says. “This sounds dramatic, but think of the pleasure of making a new skirt, or changing the drapes for new ones, and changing the décor of a room along with the fabric.”

Ready to bring a moment of English country serenity to your busy days? Stitch up some pleasure with Northcote Range.

Basic Grey featured at Quilt Market

Hello! We are BasicGrey. Please come and visit us at 2011 Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. We will be at booth 1024 showing off our new products in the fabric market.
It’s never easy being the new kid, entering a new market, searching for friendly faces in the crowd (tons, thankfully!). It’s important for us to make a good first impression, so we’re hoping for that chance. We took a similar leap into the paper-crafting market with our products over five years ago, and since, we’ve recently partnered with Moda to produce beautiful fabrics. We think we might look familiar and hope you will extend the hand of friendship. Our introductory products have an eclectic style and unique appeal, so give us a look. After all, it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Your grandmother would be proud to see these Heirloom Buttons in your next creation. Exuding timeless treasures, these crafted buttons add not only depth, but a warm, turn-of-the-century vintage appeal.
Canvas no further for your next nostalgic accent. Our Vintage Canvas Patches are darn cute with their pure ephemera feel and traditional charm. Give the look of yesteryear with your own modern twist. A Saturday afternoon-of-antiquing find, right at your fingertips.
Whether adding these accents to clothing or home decor, our Wool Felt Flowers are sure to bloom into personalized, unique creations. The seeds of inspiration have been planted, and we can’t wait to see your budding creativity.
Floral find! Add some petal perfection with our Fabric Flowers. In varying sizes and colors, these gorgeous flowers softly punch up projects with delicate detail and luxe style. We can feel the creativity blossoming.
Two scoops please! That’s what you’ll desire when you see our color-dipped Yummy Buttons. Looking good enough to eat, these opaque resin buttons are functional and fun quality accents. Hmm… would three scoops be too much? (Go for it!)
Don’t be frightened by our Gift Card Monsters. They only gobble up gift cards and folded bills. Gift-giving never looked so adorably scary. Simply stuff the monster, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind present, perfect for any spooky (or non-spooky) occasion.
Add some shimmer and shine and glass-slipper glamour with our Epoxy Buttons. These adorable, rounded buttons dress up the day-to-day with their stunning vivid to vintage patterns, encased in a simple epoxy-covered casing. Sew perfect!
We think you’ll love our new charming, extraordinary Sampler. Much like quilting samplers where “anything goes” is the theme, our Sampler offers the opportunity to showcase favorite, treasured fabrics from the trunk of old wedding dresses and heritage pieces to those just-can’t-part-with-them baby clothes. Want to dress up a room with some simple swatches of favorite fabrics? Create unique gifts and home accents by simply attaching your fabric to our pre-printed stretched canvas, available in three timeless designs.
You’ll be fit to be stitched with our Embroidered Buttons. No more pouring through the racks of vintage clothes looking for those hard-to-find buttons we wished we would have saved. We’re bringing em’ back with a decidedly modern, chic feel.
It’s the end of our first day at school and we’d like to thank you, sincerely, for giving us a chance, because that’s all we can possibly ask. If we’ve piqued your curiosity, maybe sparked a few ideas, well, our job is done. We hope for a long and happy friendship in years to come and we hope to see you around the crafting playground. Sew long!
